Aquamarine is the blue green variety of the mineral beryl whose colour colour is caused by impurities of iron. Shades can vary from pale green to light blue but the blue stones which often resemble blue topaz have usually been heat treated. Heat treatments are used to enhance or change the colour of certain gemstones in order to make them more appealing and it's a practice that has been used for thousands of years. When aquamarine is heated to around seven hundred degrees celsius a dramatic improvement in colour and clarity occurs and any tinges of green or yellow that may be present, disappear completely.
Aquamarine is the birthstone for the month of March.
