Correctly known as melithaea ochracea, sponge coral is a coral not a sponge but unlike many other species of coral it's not endangered so can be traded freely and legally. Found primarily in the South China Sea it's light weight but also quite soft hence must be handled with care. On Mohs scale of mineral hardness sponge coral grades 3½ - 4.
A brightly coloured crystal with subtle markings, sponge coral is usually stabilised because its natural tree-like structure has tiny holes created by polyps. The process of stabilising rocks and minerals involves filling the holes with a resin or other substance to prevent erosion or crumbling. The process is widely used on many natural materials to enable them to be used for other purposes.
