Black Moonstone Pendant
Translucent Black Moonstone Pendant
When talking about moonstone most people think of rainbow moonstone or labradorite but there are other types of moonstone with the main difference being colour. Black which is possibly one of the most curious of the coloured varieties is not truly black but instead a deep silvery grey. It does however like the other varieties exhibit an optical phenomenon known as adularescence or schiller. When exposed to light a glow appears from deep within the gemstone which dances around on the surface as it captures and expels the light. The effect is similar to the reflection of the moon on water which is how the name Moonstone came about.
Whilst this optical phenomenon is quite fascinating, there's something else which makes black moonstone even more curious. Although at first glance it appears to be opaque it is actually a translucent stone hence when slowly raised up towards the light, its colour drains away completely. When fully illuminated has virtually no colour at all and the only characteristics which can be seen are a few ghostly inclusions.
As well as being a stylish accessory this black moonstone pendant will appeal to anyone who's drawn towards crystals rocks and minerals. Mounted in a setting of fine sterling silver, it's sure to be a piece that will enjoy plenty of wear.
