Agate Stone Pendant
Red Agate Pendant Necklace
Wonderfully colourful agate stone pendant crafted for Stone Mania in a timeless sterling silver setting. The greyish white quartz crystals towards the centre of this highly polished cabochon make it particularly distinctive.
Agate which is known for its colours and intricate patterns is a common variety of the mineral chalcedony. In its purest form the stone is usually white and grey but impurities of other minerals bring about a wide variation of colours. These impurities are also responsible for the stone's characteristic banding.
Popular for use as a gemstone, agate tends to be polished as a cabochon or cut into beads. Agate tumbled stones are widely used in alternative therapies such as crystal healing.
Agate stones have been used for lapidary purposes for thousands of years. Agate is believed to have been one of the twelve gemstones in the High Priest's Breastplate. This religious garment was worn by the Jewish high priest during biblical times whilst presenting himself to God.
Other varieties of agate that can be found around the world include dendritic, Botswana, fire, moss, plume and polka dot to name just a few. The first part of the stone's name often depicts a particular characteristic, colour or the location where the mineral is found.
