Watermelon tourmaline is a variety of the mineral tourmaline with two distinctive zones of colour and when polished for use as a gemstone, it can command exceptional prices. Although fascinatingly translucent many varieties of tourmaline are opaque and not considered to be particularly attractive.
Tourmaline is one of the birthstones for the month of October with alternatives being opal, aquamarine and jasper. It's a relatively hard mineral grading 7 to 7½ on Mohs scale of mineral hardness and some of the finest examples come from Brazil.
