This rough turquoise nugget from Madagascar is one of only a small collection of these pieces that we currently have available. Turquoise from Madagascar is not seen as often in the UK as stones from some of the other turquoise producing countries around the world.
Having been mined for thousands of years, it's one of the oldest and best known of all gemstone varieties. Graded 5 to 6 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness means that turquoise is relatively soft but it's also delicate so it's not unusual for stones to fade or change colour if not well looked after. Although turquoise is often protected with wax or a resin to help keep it in tip top condition it's not a mineral that takes well to being cleaned so prevention is definitely better than cure.
Armed with a little knowledge it's much easier to keep your turquoise in pristine condition but in order to achieve that, it really must be well looked after. Most notably this popular and ancient mineral needs to be protected against moisture, oils from the skin and pollutants in the atmosphere which includes perfumes, hair sprays and air fresheners because all of these have the potential to cause irreparable damage.
As well as being highly sought after for use in crystal healing, it's said that if you give turquoise as a gift it will bring the recipient good luck and peace.
The turquoise nuggets in our collection of crystals, rocks and minerals have all been individually chosen by one of our team.
