Quartz is made up of silicon dioxide or silica which is found in the natural world as sand and in certain organisms. Minerals referred to as silica are made up silica and oxygen. The silica in sand is usually the crystalline form of quartz but it does occur in many different forms.
Colourless translucent or transparent varieties of quartz are also known as rock crystal or crystal quartz. Clear quartz which is a naturally occurring mineral was the first substance to be described as crystal, the Ancient Greeks believed it to be a special kind of ice which had frozen so solid it would never melt.
Considered to be one of the most powerful healing and energy amplifiers on the planet, quartz is used extensively in crystal healing and the properties of this master crystal are far too innumerable to list. Quartz is a great crystal to have around the home because it absorbs, stores, releases and regulates energy and is also said to be excellent at unblocking it.
This fascinating piece of quartz comes from South Africa and boasts exceptional clarity however as with most varieties of colourless quartz, it's does't photograph particularly well. If you imagine this was once a larger rock that was cut in half, our first picture is of the smooth inner face of one of those halves. When you look at the quartz from this angle because it's colourless, clear and lacks any fractures you can literally see right through it.
