Lapis Lazuli Carving
Highly polished lapis lazuli carving, this item may be a random shape but it caught our eye because of its exceptional colour and distinctive markings. Only the front of the stone has been shaped and it was brought out of Afghanistan by someone who sold it directly to the supplier from whom we bought it. It's a really interesting piece of lapis which is well included with the mineral iron pyrite (also known as fool's gold) and was mined, worked and polished in Afghanistan.
Lapis lazuli is often referred to as a mineral but it is in fact a blue coloured metamorphic rock that's made up of several different minerals so it cannot correctly be called a mineral and instead should be referred to as a rock. Understanding the difference between rocks and minerals can be quite confusing even for the most accomplished enthusiast.
Lapis lazuli dates back thousands of years and some of the earliest mines to have been excavated were located in Afghanistan. The material that was supplied to the Ancient Egyptians and in particular the Pharaohs came from these mines and at least one is still in operation today. The lapis in the famous funerary mask of King Tutankhamun is also believed to have come from Afghanistan.
This wonderfully tactile lapis lazuli was a great find and is sure to be enjoyed by anyone with a passion for polished rocks and minerals.
