Pietersite is a relatively rare and beautiful mineral which is found exclusively in Namibia. Although we do most of our buying in South Africa which is just across the border, it's still incredibly difficult to find nice pieces for our collection and most of the stones that are available, have been cut and polished as cabochons for use in jewellery.
First described in 1962, Pietersite is a type of brecciated tigers eye which exhibits lustrous brown and blue colouration and it's not uncommon for pieces to be slighty chatoyant. Despite sharing certain characteristics with South African tigers eye and being similar from a mineralogy perspective, pietersite occurred under very different geological conditions. Its patterns and texture have been compared to bold paint-like strokes which occur in many directions and this is particularly visible in this polished shard.
This shard of pietersite is highly polished on just one side and it is the only piece of its kind that we have in our collection.
