Pietersite is a relatively rare and beautiful natural mineral which can only be found in Namibia. Although we do most of our buying in South Africa which is just across the border, it's still incredibly difficult to find polished pietersite of this grade for our collection of rocks and minerals. Most of the material that is available to buy has already been cut and polished into cabochons for use in jewellery.
First described in 1962 Pietersite is a type of brecciated tigers eye which exhibits lustrous blues and browns and it's not uncommon for it to be slighty chatoyant. Despite sharing certain characteristics with the mineral tigers eye and being similar from a mineralogy perspective, pietersite was created under very different geological conditions.
This highly polished shard of pietersite would make a superb addition to any collection of minerals and it's the only piece of its kind that we have in our collection.
