Sodalite Sphere

Price: £79.99
Product Code: SODSP

Large and highly polished sodalite sphere which although primarily blue, also boasts black, white, grey and orange colouration which is likely to be caused in part, by inclusions of the mineral calcite. The specific colour of this piece may vary slightly depending on the accuracy of the device or monitor that you're using so it's worth mentioning that this sodalite sphere is a very distinctive royal blue colour.  Sadly our limited photographic skills means that our photo really doesn't do this piece the justice that it deserves.

Sodalite is a relatively rare rock forming mineral which grades 5 to 6 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Its primary use is as a lapidary material and when used as a gemstone it's almost always polished as a cabochon. Only the rare transparent material from Mount St Hilaire in Canada tends to be faceted. There are just three large deposits in the world where sodalite can be found the most important of which is the Bancroft Mine in Ontario, Canada.

One of many blue minerals, sodalite is often confused with the metamorphic rock known as lapis lazuli but upon closer inspection, the two are actually quite different. Sodalite which is also considerably lighter was discovered in the early 1800's and lapis has been known since the time of the pharaohs in Ancient Egypt.

This magnificent sodalite sphere will make a beautiful display piece and the only issue you'll have with it is deciding which side you prefer to have facing forwards.
