Blue Metamorphic Rock from Afghanistan
A magnificent piece of lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, highly polished and visibly included with golden specs of pyrite and white calcite. The front of this stone has been shaped whilst the back is smooth and flat.
Lapis lazuli is often referred to as a mineral when in fact it's a blue coloured metamorphic rock made up of several different minerals. Understanding the difference between rocks and minerals can be confusing even for the most accomplished enthusiast. The unmistakable colour of this stone comes from the presence of a mineral known as lazurite and the specs of pyrite often present in lapis are in fact inclusions within the lazurite.
The use of lapis lazuli as a lapidary material dates back thousands of years and some of the earliest mines to have been excavated were located in the province of Badakhshan in northeastern Afghanistan. The material supplied to the Ancient Egyptian pharaohs is believed to have come from these mines and at least one is believed to still be in operation today.
This exceptionally tactile rich blue coloured lapis lazuli stone is sure to be enjoyed by those with a passion for polished rocks and minerals.
