Rough kyanite mineral, a relatively large and chunky piece that's really quite magical but sadly our photography doesn't do it the justice that it truly deserves. This natural mineral is wonderfully translucent so when held up towards the light it exhibits a light shade of sapphire blue colour.
Kyanite often occurs as long bladed crystals and it's quite a unique mineral in that it can feature zones of colour and a difference of hardness within the same crystal. When tested lengthways it grades between 4.5 - 6 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness but when the same crystal is tested across the width, it grades 6 - 7. This characteristic along with the fact that kyanite is also very brittle makes it a difficult stone to cut hence it's not used that often as a gemstone. It is however widely used in industry primarily because of its hardness but also because of its ability to resist heat.
This piece of kyanite will really be appreciated by someone who's drawn to the beauty of rough rocks and minerals and it's the only piece of this size that we currently have in our collection.
