Natural Blue Chalcedony Mineral
Free standing blue chalcedony from South Africa. This large and chunky unpolished stone is visibly translucent towards the top and does have some minor damage around the edges but otherwise is in excellent condition. Its colour has not been treated or enhanced which I mention because it's quite common for less colourful varieties of chalcedony that are used for gemstones to be dyed and blue seems to be the colour of choice.
Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline variety of the mineral quartz which in its purest form tends to be white or grey, a subtle shade of blue or even brown. Stones often feature microscopic inclusions of other minerals and it's these which either enhance or change the colour of the stone completely.
Chalcedony has been known to man for thousands of years and was once used for weapons and tools. There are many different varieties of this mineral some of which include agate, onyx, flint, bloodstone, aventurine, carnelian and chrysoprase to name just a few.
A colourful and exceptionally tactile mineral that you'll love having as part of your collection.
