Amazonite is a variety of the mineral feldspar which tends to be relatively easy to identify because of its distinctive colour and markings. Although some amazonite exhibits slight chatoyancy, this optical phenomenon is best seen in the mineral tigers eye and some coloured moonstone.
Only the blue-green varieties of the mineral microcline are entitled to be called amazonite which is sometimes also known as Amazon Stone. Ironically it cannot be found anywhere near to the Amazon River in Brazil but some say it was confused with another stone with a very similar appearance but having already been given this name, it was never changed.
This amazonite oval is a perfect display piece for anyone who loves polished rocks and minerals but it's also exceptionally tactile so may also be suitable for use in crystal healing. According to Judy Hall's Crystal Bible, amazonite is said to help maintain optimal health and be particularly beneficial for musicians and writers.
