The Mineral Tanzanite
Tanzanite is a rare and highly sought after gemstone variety of the mineral zoisite. Said to be a thousand times rarer than a diamond, it can only be found in a tiny area at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Reserves are dwindling fast and it's estimated that within thirty years the mines will be depleted. The finest gem grade of tanzanite commands eye-watering prices per carat and stones are usually facted and often set alongside diamonds.
This rough tanzanite stone has a slightly vitreous lustre which can best be appreciated when the stone is gently moved around in good light.
Although renowned for its sapphire-blue colour, most tanzanite gemstones are heat treated. The process of heating tanzanite enhances or changes the colour of the stone and also removes any undesirable streaks which may be present.
Rough tanzanite is sought after by mineral collectors and is also used in conjunction with crystal healing.
