The Mineral Mica

Mica is a distinctive and relatively common mineral that's widely used in industry around the world.  Silvery coloured inclusions of mica can also be found within many other minerals some of which include dravite which is a brown variety of tourmaline and seraphinite. Traces of mica have also been found in cave paintings that date back 40,000 to 10,000 years BC.

Mica is part of a larger group known as silicate minerals or sheet silicates because it forms in distinctive layers.  It's fairly soft, flakey and light weight and both the layers and flakes are flexible.  It's a heat-resistant mineral that doesn't conduct electricity and there are thirty seven different varieties of mica the most common of which includes muscovite and lepidolite.

This piece of mica is highly lustrous which sadly cannot really be appreciated in our photo.  It reflects light from every angle and its colour varies depending on the angle of the light.  When viewed from the side, the layers that make up mica are clearly visible.
