Rough kyanite mineral, a relatively large and chunky piece that's really quite magical but sadly some of that magic has become lost in our photo. Kyanite is translucent so when this piece is held up towards the light it exhibits a light shade of sapphire blue colour.
Kyanite often occurs as long bladed crystals and it's quite a unique mineral not only because it can feature zones of colour but also because it has a different hardness within the same crystal. When tested lengthways it grades between 4.5 - 6 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness but when tested across the width of the same crystal it grades 6 - 7. This characteristic along with the fact that kyanite is also very brittle, makes it a difficult stone to cut hence it's not used that often as a gemstone. It is however widely used in industry primarily because of its hardness but also because of its ability to resist heat.
