Highly polished agate slices from South Africa. Each slice exhibits a vitreous lustre hence its appearance and texture is similar to glass. Whilst agate can occur in a wide variety of different colours it can also be found in varying shades of black, brown, white and grey. Stones with these colours often end up being dyed because some manufacturers believe they are not sufficiently appealing to the wider commercial market. At Stone Mania we never knowingly buy agate that has been artificially coloured and as far as we are aware, the colour of these agate slices is completely natural.
We agree that sometimes the mineral agate may not always exhibit amazing colours but what it lacks in colour it often makes up with other curious or fascinating characteristics. This translucent stone has evolved over millions of years and we believe Mother Nature has done a pretty good job. Natural rocks and minerals appeal to people for different reasons and there's so much more to agate than just its colour. It's important to note that dyeing is very different to exposing rocks or minerals to heat treatments but with that said, the process of dying agate has been going on for thousands of years.
Although the mineral agate grades 7 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness it is very brittle so these slices must be handled with care.
The size and shape of these agate slices varies from piece to piece and colour and markings also vary quite significantly.
