These royal blue sodalite tumbled stones are quite distinctive yet are often mistaken for lapis lazuli. As well as being used for its metaphysical properties, sodalite is also popular with mineral collectors. Stones often occur with a splash of white or orange colour caused by the presence of the mineral calcite.
Sodalite which is named for its high sodium content is a light weight stone used exclusively for ornamental purposes. Although graded 5.5 to 6 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness it's also brittle which can make cutting quite difficult.
Bancroft Ontario, Ice River British Columbia, Litchfield in Maine USA and Brazil are home to the largest commercial deposits of sodalite. It can also be found in smaller quantities in Greenland, Russia, Montana and India. Our sodalite tumbled stones come from the USA.
