Jade has been used in China for more than 5000 years and has played a part in almost every aspect of Chinese life and culture. Its history can be traced back as far as 100,000 years and being exceptionally tough, it was originally used for carving tools and weapons. Simple jade ornaments and stones fashioned as beads, buttons and tubes have also been found in prehistoric sites.
Although most people think of jade as being a green coloured stone, it actually occurs in many different colours. A great deal of confusion exists in regards to jadeite and nephrite jade. Although both are commonly referred to as jade, they're not exactly the same. Jade is a generic name whilst jadeite and nephrite are two specific varieties.
Nephrite which is mostly opaque tends to occur in paler colours. Jadeite has a higher lustre and can be found in a range of vibrant colours. Jadeite is mostly used for jewellery whereas nephrite is more popular for carvings.
Our nephrite jade crystals are a medium sized tumbled stone. Shapes weights and sizes do vary from piece to piece.
