Rainbow fluorite is a wonderfully colourful mineral.
The issue with tumbling this stone is that it's extremely fragile. For this reason fluorite crystals can often have minor fractures anaomalies.
Tumbled stones are produced by filling a barrel with rough pieces of stone of a similar size. Coarse grit or sand and water are then added. As the barrel slowly rotates the stones gradually become smoother and more rounded. During this process fragile stones like fluorite can sometimes fracture or chip.
As well as being relatively soft fluorite is also brittle. It's one of only a few minerals to cleave in all four directions. Cleavage is the tendency for a crystalline solid (one made up of crystals) to split along structural planes of weakness. This type of cleavage makes fluorite susceptible to internal fractures.
Zones of colour can be seen in many of these translucent crystals. Holding them up towards the light reveals their true magnificence.
Our rainbow fluorite crystals are a medium to large size. Weights and sizes vary slightly from piece to piece.
