Chilean Lapis Lazuli Tumbled Stones

Large sized lapis lazuli tumbled stones from Chile boasting incredible rich blue colour and a great size for those looking for a larger polished stone.

One of the oldest of all gemstones, lapis lazuli is known to have been mined in Northern Afghanistan for at least 6,500 years. Although Afghanistan has always been one of the world's largest producers, this blue coloured metamorphic rock can also be found in smaller quantities in a few other locations around the world.

The region in Chile where it's found is called Coquimbo and the earliest reference to the mine was 1850. Coquimbo is the only place in the country where it's found and although some references talk of another deposit, the lapis lazuli from that location was identified in 1991 as being the mineral dumortierite.

In the early 1980's the quality of the lapis lazuli was described as being "at best mediocre" but more recently significant quantities off fine grade material have been found. The mine is situated high up in the Andes on the steep slope of an amphitheatre-like valley just 500 metres from the border with Argentina. Due to extreme weather conditions the area is only accessible during the summer months which for countries in the southern hemisphere is January to April. From May the road becomes blocked by significant amounts of snow and from October, it floods as temperatures once again begin to rise.

Lapis lazuli is well known and highly sought after and although often described as a mineral it's actually a rock.  The reason for this is because it's made up of several different minerals and its rich blue colour comes primarily from the mineral lazurite.

The weights and sizes of these lapis lazuli tumbled stones varies slightly from piece to piece but they're classified as a large stone.

Empathic warrior crystals are stones which have at some point in time sustained some kind of damage, usually a chip or fracture.  With rocks and minerals having evolved over millions of years we do not believe in throwing stones away because of minor damage so instead offer them for sale at a significantly reduced price.  Empathic warrior crystals are not always available and should this be the case, a refund will be issued before remaining items in the order are processed.  For more information read our article on empathic warrior crystals
