Serpentine Tumbled Stones from Peru
Fine grade serpentine crystals from our exciting collection of rocks and minerals. These highly polished stones have an incredibly smooth texture and exhibit a dull lustre. Rocks and minerals with a dull lustre absorb light instead of reflecting it.
Serpentine does not occur as individual crystals and can only be found in massive form. Minerals with this crystal habit occur as one large mass of intergrown crystals that don't exhibit any visible external shape or structure.
Many references online state 'new jade' is an alternative name for serpentine. This apparent trade name is misleading because jade and serpentine are two completely different minerals. It may have come about because some less valuable varieties of serpentine are dyed to imitate jade. With that said, some finer varieties can look very similar to jade but serpentine is nowhere near as expensive.
The name Serpentine is believed to have come about because its colour, markings and rough scaly texture were believed to resemble a serpent. Serpentine comes from the Latin word 'serpentinus' meaning 'serpent rock' or 'serpens' meaning 'snake'. Trade names have always been important because a catchy name especially for an attractive stone, will boost sales.
Serpentine is not one mineral but a group of many whose individual chemical composition can vary significantly. Stones can be found in white, grey, yellow, green and greenish blue. The one thing all varieties have in common is they come from serpentinite rocks.
The mineral serpentine was used by the Romans because being relatively soft, it could be carved with fine detail. A Roman intaglio featuring a lion-headed God in Egyptian dress that has been dated to the 2nd or 3rd century AD is on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This item would have been used for protection against evil spirits, curses and supernatural forces.
