Red Obsidian Pendant
Mahogany Obsidian Pendant
Mahogany or red obsidian as it's also known, crafted as a ladies pendant in a simple sterling silver setting. Obsidian is natural volcanic glass so it's lighter in weight than many other natural stones but also very brittle which can make cutting quite difficult. In fact the reason why this red obsidian pendant has been reduced is because there is some minor surface damage to the back of the stone which can be seen in our last photo. The damage is purely aesthetic.
Obsidian is correctly classified as a mineraloid because it does not have a crystal structure. Volcanic glass forms as magma comes into contact with the surface of the earth and cools so quickly that crystals dodn't have time to grow.
The colours and markings in obsidian change depending on the inclusions and impurities that are present. The reddish brown colouration in red obsidian is caused by the presence of hematite which is the mineral form of iron oxide also known as rust.
Being natural glass obsidian is quite fragile and will shatter if knocked or dropped.
