Ajooba Jasper Pendant
Earthy Coloured Jasper Stone
This distinctive variety of jasper tends to be known as ajooba jasper although that's highly likely to be a trade name that originated in Jaipur in India where most of the world's cabochon gemstones are cut and polished. Mounted for Stone Mania in a simple sterling silver setting, this ladies pendant has been reduced because of some marks on the surface of the cabochon. Although quite visible in our first two photos, this was the first time that we noticed them. When looking at the surface of this jasper stone in good light it's extremely difficult to see these marks but our zoom lense and studio lighting has brought them into view.
Jasper is a natural rock that can be found in many locations around the world. It contains a high percentage of impurities and/or inclusions of other minerals and substances which is why it cannot accurately be described as a mineral in its own right. The presence of the inclusions and substances is the reason why jasper is almost always opaque and why it occurs in so many different colours and with such a wide variety of markings.
