Completely natural navy blue coloured lapis lazuli cabochon mounted as a ladies pendant in a timeless sterling silver setting. This beautiful gemstone features distinctive inclusions of the mineral pyrite and traces of white calcite can also be seen. Lapis lazuli one of the oldest of all gemstones has been used by man for thousands of years and was particularly popular in Ancient Egypt. The vast majority of the world's material comes from the Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan and Chile in South America. Badakhshan has some of the oldest lapis mines in the world and material that travelled along trade routes to Ancient Egypt is believed to have come from there.
Although often referred to as a mineral that's incorrect because minerals are crystalline or in other words naturally occurring solids made up of crystals whereas lapis lazuli is a blue coloured metamorphic rock made up of different minerals. Its tantalising navy blue colour which is the primary reason for the stone's popularity is caused by traces of a mineral called lazurite.
The reason for this lapis lazuli pendant being included in our collection of jewellery on sale is because the bale at the top is very slightly off centre. Removing the stone to have the setting re-crafted is really not viable so we have decided instead to offer it at a knockdown price. If you're looking for a spectacular hand-made lapis lazuli pendant and are not bothered by a minor imperfection, this piece will not disappoint. Needless to say should you not be totally satisfied with your purchase it may be returned for a full refund (T&C's apply).
