Turquoise is a well known and much loved natural mineral that's been hugely popular as a gemstone for thousands of years. Mined in the in the Sinai Peninsula its history can be traced back to around 6000 BC. During the reign of the Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Semerkhet mining operations were being carried out which involved thousands of workers.
Birthstone for the month of December, turquoise is one of the oldest of all gemstones and as well as one of the best known. It also happens to be one of the very few natural minerals to have given its name to a colour. Whilst most people think of the colour turquoise as being a shade of bluish green, the colour of the stone can in fact vary from apple green to sky blue.
Despite its popularity as a lapidary material turquoise is actually quite delicate so must be well looked after in order to keep stones in tip-top condition. It doesn't react well to moisture, can be damaged by pollutants in the atmosphere including perfume, hairspray and cosmetics and can even crack if exposed to sudden temperature changes. Prior to being stored away turquoise should be wiped with a soft cloth and be covered whilst not being worn. This stylish gemstone pendant comes in a protective gift pouch that's great for storage and will also help minimise any build-up of tarnish on the sterling silver.
