Moonstone is a variety of feldspar which is the family of minerals to which rainbow moonstone and labradorite also belong. Coloured moonstone is quite beautiful but not as well known as the white iridescent variety but can be just as fascinating. The stone exhibits an opalescent lustre so as it reflects light which it does from almost every angle, a glistening silky sheen can be seen dancing across the surface of the stone. This optical phenomenon is known as schiller or adularescence. The Ancient Romans likened this effect to the reflection of the moon on water which is how the name Moonstone came about.
Although slightly chunkier this elegant moonstone pendant is comfortably light weight. As with all of the gemstone pendants in our collection, it was crafted entirely by hand by one of a small team of artisans with whom we have been working for many years.
