Lapis lazuli pendant mounted in a hand crafted sterling silver setting. This distinctive blue coloured metamorphic rock has been used and enjoyed by man for around 5000 years. Highly sought after in ancient Egypt, it's featured in the death mask of King Tutankhamun which is one of the world's best known artefacts. Much of the lapis lazuli mined for the Pharaohs is known to have come from Afghanistan. Some of those same mines are still being worked today.Lapis lazuli is not a mineral in its own right because it's made up of several different minerals. Some of these include pyrite, white calcite and lazurite which is the main cause of the stone's blue colour. The reason for this chunky lapis lazuli pendant being reduced is because of a tiny chip on one side of the stone. This can be felt more than it can be seen.
