Lapis Lazuli Pendant Collection
Beautiful lapis lazuli cabochons mounted as ladies pendants in fine sterling silver. Each of these individually chosen gemstones feature inclusions of the mineral pyrite also known as fools gold and traces of white calcite. Having been carefully cut they're surprisingly light weight and are highly polished.
This distinctive blue coloured metamorphic rock has been prized as a gemstone since the time of the pharaohs and the vast majority of the world's lapis lazuli is mined in northeastern Afghanistan. The province of Badakhshan is home to some of the oldest lapis mines in the world and material supplied to Ancient Egyptian pharaohs is believed to have come from here.
Although often referred to as a mineral lapis lazuli is in fact a rock because it's made up of several different minerals. The mineral lazurite is largely responsible for the stone's distinctive navy blue colour.
Having chosen the cabochons that we wish to use in our collection they're then passed to a small team of talented artisans who craft each pendant for us entirely by hand. We've been working with this same team for almost twenty years. When lapis lazuli is mounted in silver the metal has a tendency to tarnish at a slightly faster rate than with other rocks or minerals but the exact reason for this is not entirely understood. Interestingly pure silver doesn't tarnish but because it's such a soft metal it's always alloyed with other metals to make it more durable. Copper which is one of the most popular alloys is what actually tarnishes. The build up can be minimised by keeping sterling silver covered as much as possible. Each of these lapis lazuli pendants come in a protective pouch that's ideal for storage whilst not being worn.
