Beautiful green turquoise pendant hand-crafted in timeless sterling silver. The colour of this polished cabochon is predominantly green but a small patch of turquoise can also be seen. The dark spidery veins and other dark markings which are used to correctly identify turquoise are known as matrix they're the remnants of the original host rock in which the mineral formed. This bulbous shaped cabochon is slightly flatter towards the top which is the natural shape of the stone and it's quirks like this that make gemstones so wonderfully unique.
The mineral turquoise which has been mined for thousands of years is one of the very few stones to have attributed its name to a colour. Although thought of as a specific shade of blue, the stone can actually vary from apple green to sky blue. The variation in colour is caused by the presence of copper, iron and occasionally zinc. The name turquoise was first used in the United Kingdom in reference to a colour in 1573.
