On Mohs scale of mineral hardness which is a scale that measures the scratch resistance of one mineral against another, dumortierite grades 8 which is impressively hard. First identified in 1881 by a French mineralogist who named it in honour of palaeontologist Eugene Dumortier, dumortierite is mainly used for lapidary purposes.
