Amethyst Pendant Fine Sterling Silver
Fine grade amethyst crystal mounted as a pendant in a hand-made sterling silver setting.
In its purest form the mineral quartz is colourless but the presence of impurities introduces a wide variety of different colours. Iron is the primary reason why amethyst crystals are purple but heat/irradiation and pressure also play a significant part. Rich purple coloured crystals with good saturation are highly sought after especially for use in holistic therapies such as crystal healing. In jewellery these stones can look quite dark but with the introduction of light a magical transformation takes place.
Amethyst stones are well known for colour zoning which means different shades of colour can occur within the same crystal. In the finest grade faceted material colour zoning can affect the value of a gemstone.
Heating amethyst crystals changes the chemical makeup which causes them to change colour. Darker shades of purple can be lightened, unwanted tinges can be removed and much of the world's commercial grade citrine is produced by heat treating amethyst.
In geological terms amethyst is the purple variety of the mineral quartz yet stones described as pink or green amethyst can often be found online. The pink crystals are either a subtle shade of violet which is within the normal colour range for the stone or the colour has been produced through heating. Green amethyst is a misnomer because amethyst cannot be green. This colour can only be produced through the application of heat.
This comfortably light weight amethyst pendant necklace has been crafted by hand by one of a small team of artisans with whom we've been working for almost twenty years. As magnificent as it is, the colour of amethyst will fade if crystals are exposed to bright sunlight or heat for long periods of time. For this reason this mineral should never be placed close to a window or a heater.
