Dinosaur Bone Pendant
Agatised Dinosaur Bone Pendant
Dinosaur bone also known as agatised dinosaur bone or just plain old dino bone (in the USA) has to rank in the top ten of the most unusual gemstones found in a piece of jewellery. Agatised dinosaur bone is a more accurate description of what the material actually is and if you're familiar with petrified wood, it's kind of similar to that.
Dinosaur bone is formed through permineralisation which is a process of fossilisation that involves different minerals replacing the organic tissue in the original bone structure of fallen dinosaurs. The process that follows is called petrifaction and what actually takes place is minerals which have dissolved in groundwater fill spaces in the organic material and as the water dries up just minerals are left behind and by this time they have solidified.
Most of the world's dinosaur bone comes from Utah and Colorado.
This highly polished deep chestnut brown coloured stone has been mounted in a simple sterling silver setting. It's a light weight piece of jewellery that will certainly make a great topic of conversation.
