Known for its large crystals which can often be almost transparent, smoky quartz occurs in several countries around the world. This piece comes from South Africa. When cut as a gemstone smoky quartz is often confused with smoky topaz. Topaz and quartz are two are completely different minerals.Although relatively hard smoky quartz is brittle so must be handled carefully. Its colour does have a tendency to fade if exposed to bright sunlight for long periods of time. Some of the smoky quartz being sold is clear quartz that has been irradiated (heated). This changes the colour to smokey brown. This colour of this smoky quartz crystal is natural.
