Kyanite crystals are translucent so when illuminated the colour can become more intense. Crystals often exhibit zones of colour and can also have a different hardness. When tested lengthways kyanite grades 4.5 to 6 on Mohs scale but when tested across the width it grades 6 to 7.This characteristic along with it being very brittle makes it difficult to cut. For this reason kyanite is not used that often as a gemstone. It's widely used in industry primarily because of its hardness but also because of its ability to resist heat.Kyanite usually occurs as long bladed crystals.
