Aquamarine is the blue variety of the mineral beryl. Translucent gem grade material is highly sought after. Most aquamarine has been heat treated. It's generally greenish blue but heating can remove unwanted tinges of colour and make it more blue. Although this rough stone is mostly opaque, some translucence can be seen across the top and around the edges.Aquamarine is relatively hard, it grades 7.5 - 8 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Some of the largest and finest aquamarine crystals ever to have been found are on display in museums around the world. In 1910 a single 550,000 carat crystal was found in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil.
