A beautiful amethyst geode with large translucent crystals.Colour zoning is a common characteristic in amethyst. Where present different shades of colour can be seen within the same crystal. This can be seen in this geode. The unmistakable colour of amethyst is caused by impurities of iron. When the crystal is exposed to heat early in its formation, the colour begins to change. Some of the world's finest amethyst comes from South America particularly Brazil and Uruguay. The mineral's purple colour is sensitive to light. Exposure to sunlight for for long periods of time will cause it to gradually fade.
