Sugilite Rough Stone

Sugilite is a rare natural mineral which comes predominantly from the Kalahari Manganese Field, Northern Cape, South Africa. The Kalahari Manganese Field is the largest sedimentary manganese deposit in the world and many rare and beautiful minerals come from the mines in this area.

Fine grade sugilite is extremely difficult to source and the grade known as gel sugilite can command exceptionally high prices.  When pieces do become available they're quickly scooped up mainly by collectors and dealers around the world.  A kilo of 'decent grade' rough sugilite currently costs in the region of £1200 ($1500) which is a wholesale price for companies like ourselves who buy directly from suppliers in South Africa.

This rough slab of sugilite has distinctive purple colour which sits on a matrix of bustamite and manganese. The back of the rock has an extensive covering of snow-white coloured crystals which sparkle incessantly as they catch the light but sadly they do look a little flat in our photo.
