Some of the finest rhodochrosite ever to have been found comes from the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado which is now closed. The largest crystal in the world which is on display in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science is believed to be around thirty million years old. It's known as the Alma King.
Most commercial grade rhodochrosite comes from South America. Fine gem-grade crystals are rare so don't tend to be widely used in jewellery.
