Orange River quartz is a colourful mineral not seen that often in Europe. It's named after the Orange River which runs through South Africa.
Starting in Lesotho and going on to form the border between South Africa and Namibia, the Orange River runs through the Northern Cape Province.
The deep reddish orange colour of the quartz comes from hematite. These crystals sit just below the surface.
A colourful piece of quartz full of terminated crystals. With them having a vitreous lustre, they reflect light in a similar way to glass. Sadly we've not been able to capture the reflections particularly well.
