Fine Grade Selenite Mineral
Selenite is a colourless translucent mineral that's one of four varieties of gypsum. It almost always has an obvious crystal structure and is extremely soft so grades just 2 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness. To put that into perspective selenite can be scratched with a finger nail.
Gypsum is widely mined and can be used as a fertiliser, it's also the main ingredient in blackboard chalk and most varieties of plaster including plaster of Paris. Alabaster which has been used for sculptures for thousands of years is a variety of gypsum.
This fine grade selenite mineral is virtually transparent and because of the mineral's natural insulating properties it feels quite warm to the touch.
Selenite has a vitreous and slightly pearlesque lustre. Its name originates from the Greek words for moon and stone or stone of the moon. In Greek mythology Selene is the goddess of the moon.
