Large and highly polished red jasper cabochon cut from material mined in Brazil. The base of this deep red and white coloured stone is unpolished.
Red jasper is a microcrystalline variety of quartz used primarily for decorative purposes. A popular stone for use in jewellery, with it being opaque it's almost always cut as a cabochon. Red jasper stones of this size and grade are not readily available.
When the mineral quartz occurs with tiny crystals (microcrystalline) instead of crystals which are macrocrystalline (large enough to be seen) it becomes known as chalcedony. There are many different varieties of chalcedony some of which include agate, carnelian, bloodstone, onyx and jasper to name just a few.
This is the only red jasper gemstone in this size that we currently have available.
