A beautiful amethyst terminated crystal with the most subtle purple colour.
Amethyst is the purple variety of the mineral quartz whose colour is caused by impurities of iron. Iron alone however does not cause the crystal to change colour. For that to happen it must be exposed to heat and in nature, that usually happens through radiation.
The upper section of this amethyst terminated point holds most of the colour whilst the lower section has hardly turned purple at all. Colour zoning which is a common characteristic of amethyst can also be seen towards the top of the crystal. Chevron amethyst is the most extreme example.
Amethyst is one of the most popular and best known varieties of the mineral quartz. Birthstone for the month February, it's widely used as a gemstone and is believed to have exceptional metaphysical healing properties.
