Large Carnelian Mineral
Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony whose colour can vary from deep red to reddish brown to various shades of orange. It can also be white and some stones like this piece can even feature subtle shades of blue.
The colour of carnelian comes from impurities of iron often in the form of hematite. It can be uniform throughout the stone or occur in bands. Stones that are banded tend to be known as agate.
Carnalian exhibits a vitreous lustre so it reflects light in a similar way to glass.
This large and highly polished carnelian free-form has attractive markings and several variations of colour can be seen. It's a free-standing ornamental piece which can be positioned on two different sides.
This polished carnelian mineral does have some minor surface imperfections. They certainly don't spoil what is a beautiful piece. It comes from South Africa and is the only piece of carnelian of this grade that we currently have available.
