Lapis Lazuli Rough
Rough Lapis Stones from Afghanistan
Rough lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, a rich blue coloured metamorphic rock with visible inclusions of the minerals calcite and pyrite. Lapis lazuli has been known to have been mined for at least 6,500 years and the area of Badakhshan in northeastern Afghanistan is believed to be home to some of the oldest mines in the world.
Lapis lazuli is classified as a rock not a mineral because it's composed of several different minerals. Its unmistakable blue colour and golden speckles of pyrite both come primarily from the presence of lazurite. In addition to sodalite, white calcite and pyrite other minerals present can include diopside, enstatite, mica, hauynite and hornblende.
The size of these rough lapis lazuli stones is best described as medium to large although exacts weights and sizes do vary from piece to piece. For this reason if you are purchasing multiple stones there is a slight possibility our system may not calculate the price of postage accurately and you may be charged more than we end up paying. Should this be the case a refund will be issued once your order has been dispatched.
