Demantoid Garnet
Rough Green Garnet Crystals
Demantoid garnet is one of the rarest and most valuable of all gemstones because of its magnificent colour. The name demantoid comes from the Dutch word for diamond because when polished, this variety of garnet can have a fire that's greater than that of a diamond. The term fire when used in relation to a gemstone is a reference to the way that it splits light into spectral colours, the gemological term for this is dispersion. Some of the finest demantoid garnets can rival the colour of a fine emerald.
This rough demantoid garnet comes from Namibia and each of the tiny olive green coloured crystals sparkle beautifully as it catches the light but sadly we have not been able to capture it particularly well in our photo.
Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January.
