The colour of green calcite usually comes from copper. Very occasionally it can come from iron but it's really not that common.
The specific shade of green can vary depending on the concentration of the impurity.
Calcite is allochromatic which means its colour is always caused by something outside of its natural chemical elements.
It was named by the ancient Roman naturalist and natural philosopher Pliny the Elder [23-79 AD]. It was given the name 'calx' from the Latin for 'chalk' or 'limestone'.
Calcite mostly occurs in sedimentary rocks such as limestone.
