Radiant Chrysocolla Polished Mineral

The colour of chrysocolla is certainly magnificent but the main issue with this natural mineral is that it's often extremely soft. Frequently occurring in and around copper mines and also close to deposits of the mineral malachite, it grades a mere 2 to 2½ on Mohs scale of mineral hardness so to put that into perspective, it's only very slightly harder than talc and about the same hardness as a finger nail.  Talcum is a clay mineral from which talcum powder is produced.

This highly polished piece of chrysocolla exhibits incredible colour and originates from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa.  It's a minor ore of copper which forms by water which contains silica or silicon dioxide.  Although there is an overwhelming temptation to touch it, it should be handled as little possible because it really is very fragile.

When combined with the minerals quartz or chalcedony chrysocolla is slightly harder which makes it more suitable to be used as a gemstone or for other lapidary purposes.  With that said, it is still quite a fragile material which makes it challenging to work with.
