Bumblebee Jasper Polished Stone
Bumblebee jasper is a relatively rare stone which can only be found on the volcanic island of Java in Indonesia. Although referred to as a jasper some doubt that it's a jasper at all and believe it to be fibrous calcite that's coloured by several other minerals including sulphur, orpiment or possibly both and also hematite. As far as we're aware no in depth analysis has ever been carried out on bumblebee jasper and due to its rarity, that's fairly unlikely to happen at any time soon.
Sadly bumblebee jasper is almost completely mined out so finding nice grade stones can be a real challenge. Most of the stones that are available to buy have either been tumbled or are waiting to be (or have already been) cut as cabochons for use in the jewellery trade. India cuts millions of cabochons each year and during visits we've seen large amounts of low to medium grade stones but in Jaipur where most of the cutting is carried out, it's known as Eclipse Stone.
This colourful stone would make a great addition to any collection of polished rocks and minerals. We're not sure how stable the yellow colouration is so with that said, we'd recommend keeping this bumblebee jasper stone somewhere away from direct sunlight.
